Definition: Bone Mineral Density (BMD) - When various bone scanning techniques are used, the provide a measure of the mineral content of bones. Much of the strength of the skeleton comes from the minerals calcium and phosphorus. BMD provides an indirect estimate of an individual’s bone strength and their risk for bone fracture.
Examples: A fractured hip bone is usually associated with low bone mineral density.
